What a website actually costs in Kenya

Quotes for the same small-business website in Nairobi range from about KSh 8,000 to well over KSh 100,000, which is not much help when you are trying to budget. Here is what each band buys, and the recurring cost most quotes leave out.

The bands, roughly

A freelancer typically charges KSh 15,000 to KSh 40,000 for a mobile-friendly site with a contact form and basic SEO. This is the most common choice for a small business and usually good value.

A small studio or agency typically runs KSh 40,000 to KSh 120,000. You are paying for design work, a content management system and someone accountable for the result.

Below about KSh 15,000 you are generally buying a template filled in quickly. That can be perfectly adequate — but it is worth knowing that is what it is, rather than expecting bespoke design at that price.

The cost that isn't in the quote

Maintenance is commonly quoted from around KSh 5,000 a month, and it is where most of the lifetime cost of a small-business website actually sits. Hosting, a domain renewal, and someone to call when a price needs changing.

Domains are the small part: a .co.ke runs roughly KSh 1,000 to KSh 2,000 a year and a .com around KSh 1,500 to KSh 2,500.

The failure mode is not the build cost. It is a site built well in year one, never updated because each change means a phone call and an invoice, and quietly wrong about your prices by year three.

Where this fits

Ivy is not the right answer for a booking system, a real shop with checkout, or anything custom — hire a developer for those and expect the figures above.

For a site that says who you are, what you offer, what it costs and how to reach you, it is KSh 500 a month with changes included, and free to build so you can compare it against a quote before spending anything.

If you outgrow it, paid plans download the whole site as plain HTML and CSS you can hand to any developer. That is the part worth checking in any quote you take: what you own at the end, and what it costs to change it.

Questions

How much should a small business website cost in Kenya?

Most small businesses are quoted KSh 15,000 to KSh 40,000 by a freelancer, or KSh 40,000 to KSh 120,000 by an agency. Budget separately for maintenance, commonly from about KSh 5,000 a month.

Why are quotes so different for the same thing?

Mostly because 'a website' covers everything from a filled-in template to a custom build with a content system and ongoing support. Ask what happens when you need a price changed — the answer usually explains the gap.

Is a cheap website worth it?

It depends what you need. A clear, current page with your services, prices and phone number beats an expensive site that is two years out of date. What matters more than the build price is whether you can keep it accurate.
